Mafia Island is located in the magnificent southern circuit of Tanzania and Zanzibar and is part of a fascinating array of parks, wildlife reserves, and Indian Ocean islands. Mafia Island and its reefs are renowned as an excellent, world-class diving destination.
The Dive Centre and Lodge are situated in the Marine Park in Utende, which is in the South-East of Mafia Island. Fully equipped Dive Centre with on-site accommodation, a beach restaurant and uninterrupted views over Chole Bay. You can visit the smaller islands to see the historic ruins and magnificent fruit bats, and snorkel with whale sharks.
We offer our guests different options for their accommodation needs whilst they are staying on Mafia Island.
Located a stone-throw away from the Diving Centre, there are several bungalows. These recently updated bungalows offer private bathrooms with hot water, outside seating, air conditioning, and beds with mosquito nets. Linen and towels are provided.

Located in the gardens behind the Diving Centre, there are several safari tents. These tents have a light, power socket, twin beds, and safety deposit boxes inside. They have access to well-kept communal toilets and showers. Linen and towels are provided.

Day 1
Depart Johannesburg on your Airlink flight to Dar Es Salaam at 08h35, landing at 13h00.
Depart Dar Es Salaam on your Auric Air Services flight to Mafia Island at 15h00, landing at 15h30.
On arrival, it is approximately a 5km road transfer to Butiama Lodge.
Day 2 – 7
Spend your days at leisure and enjoy an 8-dive package. More dives can be arranged, including a muck dive.
Enjoy a long morning out at sea to snorkel with whale sharks, and you will be visiting Chloe Island across the bay on another excursion too.
Day 8
Check out and transfer to the airport for your Auric Air Services flight to Dar Es Salaam at 15h45, landing at 16h15.
Transfer from the airport to a day-use hotel. In the evening, you will enjoy dinner and drinks at a lovely beachfront hotel in the bustling city.
Day 9
Get ready to leave for the airport to catch your Airlink flight at 3h25, landing in Johannesburg at 6h10.
Mafia Island beckons adventure seekers to its pristine waters. From amazing marine megafauna to a macro paradise. A muck dive is available on request, where you may find ghost pipefish dancing in pairs, beautifully decorated scribbled pipefish, seahorses, tiny frogfish, harlequin shrimp, and more. This dive is in shallow water, a short boat ride away. Here, you can enjoy a relaxed and extra-long macro dive.

Explore the underwater world of Chole Bay! A great trip for all experience levels. Enjoy discovering all of the sea life that Chole Bay has to offer. With an experienced guide, you will travel by Dhow to one of the many locations available for snorkelling in the area.
Your guide will give you a short introduction to using the equipment (if you are new to snorkelling), then take you into the water to show you the many different species that Chole Bay has to offer. You will be amazed by the vast array of colours, shapes, and sizes!

Explore the ruins of the old city of Kua, located on the west side of Juani. The 10th-century ruins were once an important trading centre, linking Africa to Asia. The reason for the decline of this city is still undetermined. Afterwards, head up a shallow channel to the Kua Lagoon – a fierce blue lagoon with a unique feature.
As the tide changes, the lagoon is a natural pool filled with upside-down jellyfish! When the lagoon is at low tide, you can enjoy the view of crashing waves breaking on the exposed reef.

A must-do trip for anyone visiting Mafia Island! This remote sandbank offers a stunning scene of white sand and turquoise blue waters. Start with a leisurely trip in a traditional dhow to the sandbank situated south of Mafia Island. Enjoy snorkelling on the nearby reefs with colourful corals and a variety of fish species. Then for lunch, take a picnic on the sandbank with fire-cooked fish, salad, and pasta.
Take a swim in the clear, calm water, and enjoy another snorkel in the nearby reef.

A popular choice for your romantic getaway… Head out on one of the traditional wooden dhows to experience the stunning sunset views from the sea. Your crew will raise the sail (wind permitting!) and you will have a chance to sail leisurely around the area, taking in the views, whilst sipping sparkling wine, eating nibbles, and watching the sun go down.
